Surprising Things You May Not Know About Artificial Grass

Surprising Things You May Not Know About Artificial Grass

When it comes to Artificial Grass, there’s so many things you may not know. From draw-dropping facts to simply amazing benefits,

Drought tolerant, sustainable and evergreen, synthetic grass is sprouting up (horrible pun, we know) everywhere. Low maintenance and return on investment are a huge draw for consumers. There are a few things you may be unaware of though. It’s about time you got educated on our 4 surprising things you may not know about Artificial Grass.

Artificial Grass is Made Just Like Carpet

This one surprises for a couple of reasons. Artificial grass is made very similar to carpet. If you think about it, artificial grass is really a type of outdoor carpet that lets water drain through. You may have heard it been described with carpet terminology. “Pile Height” refers to the length of the blade from the backing to surface. Synthetic grass “yarn” is made up of plastic polymers. In fact, a lot of it is produced in carpet factories because of its similarities to carpet.

It’s More Popular Than You Think

While the trend is still growing in the US, artificial grass is all the rage in the UK and South Africa. This in itself has created a problem particularly in South Africa – the emergency of many scrupulous contractors. Be on the lookout and make sure you hire the right contractor.

There’s So Many Options

Artificial grass and installation comes in different varieties: in-fill, non in-fillsports and hybrid.

  • In-fill grasses have a material added to the top to weigh the grass down and keep the pile vertical.
  • Non in-fill grasses do not need material added to the top and are pinned down.
  • Sports grass is generally longer and has an additional performance in-fill to support players running around. (These are known as 3G or 4G pitches just to catergorise them even more!)
  • Hybrid grass is a mixture of real grass that has fake grass stitched into it.

You’ve Seen It More Than You May Think

Artificial grass is very common in stadiums around the world, US where NFL games are played, UK Soccer grounds, with most of the top premier league clubs playing on grounds with artificial grass present, and now in South Africa many schools and sports clubs have switched to artificial sport fields e.g. hockey, rugby soccer etc.

Artificial Grass – Is artificial grass really green?

Artificial Grass – Is artificial grass really green?

Artificial grass has come a very long way from its United States origin in the 1960’s. Originally developed for the Astrodome stadium in Houston, Texas (and now you know where the term ‘AstroTurf’ comes from) and made of nylon, it was only in the late 1990’s to early 2000’s that the polyethylene based artificial grass, similar to what we see today, made an appearance.

Thanks to the rapid advances in materials, design and technology, artificial grass today, mimics natural grass and has in many ways, proven a highly viable, environmentally friendly alternative to the real thing.

But artificial grass is plastic!

Polyethylene terephthalate is the plastic used most in the production of artificial lawn. A plastic resin and a form of polyester made from only carbon and hydrogen, polyethylene is as far as plastics are concerned, considered safe. Used in many forms from food and cosmetics packaging to medical equipment, this material does not leach any chemicals that are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones.

What about the infill?

Artificial grass requires an infill in order to keep the pile from going flat. The specific type of infill that you need, will depend on the variety of artificial grass you have installed, as well as whether pets will be using the lawn too.

Rubber crumb infill, which is essentially a recycled material made from used vehicle tyres, has raised some serious health concerns in the past. With advances in technology however, there are many other options available that are neither dangerous for our health, and which do the job even better.

Lawn is not natural.

Beautifully manicured, rolling green lawns are very much man-made. As we know, achieving the perfect lawn requires a lot of time and effort, as well as chemicals and water.

In nature, grasses undergo a growth and renewal cycle that works in sync with the natural habitat. This cycle includes the required water retention and natural composting required for the grass to survive.

Lawn on the other hand, is often a hybrid grass that is neither indigenous, nor entirely suited to the region in which it grows and therefore needs additional water and nutrients in order to thrive. This is why lawns have often been referred to as ‘green deserts’ on account of their disproportionate reliance on natural resources.

Artificial grass is for this reason, an eco-friendly choice. It provides the look and functionality that people want, while having the least impact on the environment.

All those chemicals!

While lawn maintenance such as top dressing is a more natural way to keep lawns looking great, the perfect green lawn, requires chemical fertiliser and a range of pesticides for it to keep looking lush and vibrant all year round. These chemicals and pesticides leach into the ground and negatively impact local aquatic, insect, bird and other wildlife species.

Turf grass provides virtually no habitat for pollinators and other animals and plants that make up a healthy, diverse ecosystem, so considering this, genuine lawn costs the environment dearly in every conceivable way.

As with real lawn, a artificial lawn offers no habitat for life, however it is far less destructive to the environment. You get the colour and look you want all year round, without the chemicals, pesticides and wastage of water.

How about the environmental cost of manufacture?

When it comes to considering the eco-friendliness of anything, one must always take longevity into account. The manufacture of artificial grass, as with the manufacture of anything, does have its impact on the environment, however, considering the fact that a professionally installed and good quality artificial lawn will last up to 20 years, this is an investment with a far smaller environmental footprint over that 20-year period, than that of a genuine lawn.

For anyone wanting or needing a beautiful, lush green lawn, today’s artificial lawn options provide a healthy, environmentally responsible alternative. To get the best service from your artificial lawn, it is essential that it should be professionally installed.

With artificial grass options to suit every lawn application, we can help you whether you need a commercial, or residential installation.

Have you chosen artificial grass that lasts?

Have you chosen artificial grass that lasts?

Previously the preference of those with an aversion to lawnmowers and daily watering, artificial grass has quickly gained popularity in recent months. So in deciding on artificial grass for your outdoor space, durability is one of the considerations that would (or should) be high on your list of priorities. For the sort of outlay you can expect, you really want something that lasts!maltese-thinkingCape Town enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate. This means hot, dry summers and cool to cold and wet winters. Johannesburg on the other hand is classified as subtropical, with warm, wet summers and mild to cold, but generally dry winters.

Although Johannesburg weather is a little more forgiving than Cape Town, our South African climate is undeniably harsh. It stands to reason then, that anything outdoors is liable to take a beating.

If you really want to get the most bang for your buck, only the most durable, professionally installed artificial grass will do.

So what should you be looking for when choosing artificial turf that will last?

  1. Quality, not cost.
You may be thinking that cheap does not pay, and you would be right! But just because some suppliers of artificial turf carry a heavy price-tag, does not mean that they offer a durable product. Insist on quality above all else. Typically, the lighter and finer the synthetic grass, the cheaper the material that it’s made from. Ask to walk on the turf your supplier offers you and check the quality and density of the mesh weave – or the underside of the synthetic turf.
  1. Designed and manufactured for the South African climate.
Not all artificial turf is made equal. Though your artificial grass may be manufactured outside of the country, it is essential to find a supplier that imports synthetic turf that has been designed for our climate. Don’t feel shy to find out about who designed the grass you are looking at, the standards the product adheres to, as well as the materials and the manufacturing techniques used. As a final deciding question, you should definitely ask whether the synthetic grass on offer, has been PROVEN to withstand our harsh climate!
  1. Professional installation.
As with anything, shoddy workmanship will ruin otherwise good materials. Even the very best synthetic turf will fail if installed incorrectly. This is where references are key. When a synthetic grass supplier has a history of happy clients, they will have plenty of individuals who will be quite willing to offer candid feedback on their experience. Be specific. Ask to speak to references who have had their grass for the longest time and when speaking to these references, remember to enquire about how their synthetic turf has held up against the climate and wear. Also check whether your supplier uses sub-contractors for installation, or whether they install artificial grass using their own skilled teams.

Our products carry up to a 10 year warranty depending on the product chosen. Perfect Grass also offers a workmanship guarantee on installations.

Artificial grass is not cheap, but remember that for residential customers, artificial grass will increase both the value and saleability of your property, while for commercial clients, you will be looking at a host of cost and maintenance related benefits. Rather take your time choosing a synthetic grass supplier that you can trust. Ask as many questions as you need to ensure you make an informed decision and get the best possible returns on your financial investment.

At Perfect Grass we have sourced a range of premium quality synthetic grass options that we ourselves would be happy to invest in for our own premises. For Cape Town customers, it is probably a relief to know that thanks to our dedicated relationship with our manufacturer, we have maintained a steady supply of stock. Following the recent drought, finding artificial grass in Cape Town has become tricky!

We know that our product stands the test of time, and thanks to our highly skilled team, every installation so far, has been a success. Having said this, we welcome your questions! Get in touch with us today to find out more about what we can offer you. We believe we have struck the balance between outstanding quality and affordability and we are sure that once you have worked with us, you will agree.

Artificial Grass – Common Myths about Artificial Grass Debunked!

Artificial Grass – Common Myths about Artificial Grass Debunked!

Common Myths about Artificial Grass Debunked!

When talking with a potential clients over the years about installing artificial grass at their homes, several of them had some concerns.

In fact, those concerns were based on information that’s obsolete or was never true in the first place. While not doubting the sincerity of our potential clients, it pays to do your own homework and put these myths about artificial grass to rest.

At Perfect Grass we have decided to write this blog to set the fact straight. To make this situation easier, we’re going to dedicate this blog post to busting these myths and help our clients recognise the false from the facts…

Myth: “It is too expensive”

The cost of artificial grass widely depends on two factors; the grass type you choose and how much area you have to cover. If you only have a small garden to fill, the cost is going to be considerably cheaper than covering a larger area. In addition to this, installing the grass yourself can also help cut down costs associated with artificial grass. It is also important to remember that artificial grass is an investment for the future as most brands are expected to last for at least 20 years when well maintained.

Myth: “Animals don’t like artificial grass”

Pets are not able to tell the difference between real grass and the artificial type, to them it is just grass! Other bonuses include the prevention of them digging up holes all over the garden plus, when they answer nature’s call, the mess can be easily cleaned and will not stain! Also ensure you choose a pet-friendly product which reduces the odour.

Myth: “It looks fake”

Artificial Grass Cape Town Welegadacht
Artificial Grass Cape Town Welegadacht

Artificial grass has been well designed and adapted over the course of many years. This means that the artificial grass you may remember from a few years ago looks nothing like the artificial grass of 2017. Here at Perfect Grass, we make our artificial grass as realistic as possible whilst maintaining an attractive quality! We encourage our clients to touch and feel the products on the market prior to making an informed decision.

Myth: “The grass is hard and scratchy…”

Once upon a time this was true, but artificial grass is now much closer to imitating real grass. The feel under foot, is soft and spongy which is ideal for for kids and pets. Generally the cheaper the grass, the lower the quality, so always bear that in mind when buying, Quality is key!

Myth: “The Artificial Grass gets too Hot”

The grass manufactured today is designed to reflect rather than absorb heat.
That means it’s still comfortable to walk barefoot across the lawn on a hot summer day. In fact, it will feel much nicer than trying to walk down the paved driveway with no shoes on.

The myths have been busted and the facts have been revealed; it’s time to get in contact with the best suppliers of artificial grass around today!

Get in touch with us today, and one of our consultants will be happy to visit your premises and advise on the best artificial grass options for your particular needs.

Hiring the right Artificial Grass Contractor – 10 Must Know Tips!

Hiring the right Artificial Grass Contractor – 10 Must Know Tips!

The time has come to look at giving your lawn a makeover and you have decided to install artificial grass. Whatever the home renovation that you’re considering, you’ll want to find the right contractor – someone you can trust to get the job done right and at a fair price.

Here are 10 Tips on finding the ideal artificial grass contractor in South Africa:

1. Get at least 3 Quotes

As with any project, it’s wise to get multiple quotations. Do your homework and spend time researching; you have a terrific resource called the internet at your disposal. When selecting the companies that you would like to receive a quotation from, use the following checklist:

2. Does your artificial grass contractor operate from a permanent place of business?image2

If the contractor is not permanently established, you run the risk that they will not complete the work or be in business to honour your warranties, or even be there if you encounter any problems with the installation. We’ve all heard the stories where homeowners make a sizeable deposit and then the contractor disappears. Don’t be that homeowner!

3. Is the company registered i.e. has a company registration number and registered for VAT?

Make sure the company has has a CK number or company registaration number coupled with general liability insurance in case of accidents on the job. When a contractor quotes you ensure that VAT is charged. This gives you comfort the company is compliant. Don’t be afraid to ask for copies of these relevant documentation.

4. How long has the company been in business?

A well-established synthetic grass contractor is a great indicator of quality of product and service. Ask for references if you feel concerned or uncomfortable, and look online for customer reviews. Visit the job sites if possible, and speak to the homeowners.

image35. Get everything in writing on your contract

Get everything in writing will prevent problems that may arise before, during, or after a job. Get all the details of the job in writing and make sure all concerns are addressed to avoid a miscommunication. Walk away from vague proposals or prices written down on the back of a business card.

6. Walk away from that overpriced quotation, but also negate that ludicrous, low-ball quotation

A contractor that gives you a figure that’s almost too good to be true is probably cutting corners, using questionable materials, or desperate for work.

7. Be careful of Scam Artists

There are many scam artists posing as contractors, and wanting to enter into the market during the water restriction in Cape Town and South Africa.

8. Only Accepts cash

If a contractor only accepts cash is usually an indication that he’s trying to avoid paying taxes or requests wants no pay trail of the transaction. Other contractors with who have no experience or cashflow tend to request that the client  purchases the artificial grass and they will install. This is an indication that they don’t have the cash flow hence a great risk since you won’t be able to find them in the industry very long.

9. Provides a “final” quotation without seeing the job site

It is important to meet with the contractor or his sales rep before you pay a deposit.

10.  An Artificial Grass Contractor pressures you for a quick hiring decision

If a contractor pressures you for a quick hiring decision check out their website. Is it lush with information and contains a large photo gallery of past jobs, or is it a minimal-page template with very little content?

Finding a reliable artificial grass contractor can be a headache, but at least, in today’s world, you have a great resource in the internet to do your homework, compared to when one had to find a contractor in a phone book, which was pretty much a shoot in the dark process.

Before you go ahead with your contractor of choice ask yourself  “Is this contractor someone I can trust giving thousands of Rands to do your garden improvement project?” If you hesitate, walk away and find a reputable Artificial Grass  installer who you can trust.

Perfect Grass is a provider and installer of quality artificial grass and someone you can trust.

Artificial Grass – How to beat hay fever this summer with artificial grass?

Artificial Grass – How to beat hay fever this summer with artificial grass?

Summer is a fabulous time of the year where you can relax in the pool or simply just kick your soccer ball around. How can you possibly look forward to it when all you can think about is the incoming bout of hay fever?

Hay fever is a common problem in South Africa. It’s an allergic reaction to pollen in the air. Tracking down the type of pollen a person is allergic to can be tricky. You can narrow it down with the time of year and the circumstances. For example:

  • August to February is the time for grass pollens
  • July to September is the time for tree pollens

The best way to fix the problem is to avoid grassed areas – get someone else to mow and never lie down on a lawn. They also suggest using the water sprinkler to dampen down the pollen before you sit in the garden. Another interesting tip is to dampen down the fur of any pets who have been playing on the grass. (As they may well have picked up pollen in their coats).

There’s another option – skip the tablets and the mowing, and beat hay fever by choosing artificial grass. In South Africa we always like to think it will be a good summer with cool evenings. Where you can sit outside, enjoy the fresh air, and a braai with friends and family. With artificial grass in your garden, anyone with a grass allergy should be more than happy to come to the party!

What about my pets?

Did you know that even your animals can suffer from allergies?

It can be hard to tell whether your pet is being affected by the heat or the pollen.

Have you ever noticed weeping or inflamed/red eyes or overzealous grooming and scratching?

These are just a few of the symptoms of hay fever in pets:

If your pet is prone to allergies you have a few options. Most dogs won’t mind being hosed down (although it’s best to avoid wetting your cat). You can wipe your pet’s paws and coat with grooming wipes, or use a specialist brush. Make sure you groom them very regularly and keep long haired pets trimmed for their comfort. Make sure to sweep outside runs and wash bedding. Finally, you can consult your vet for allergy tablets.

You can also minimise your pets’ suffering with an artificial grass. Our artificial grass is pet friendly and perfect for every season.

Artificial Grass – 5 reasons why dogs love it?

Artificial Grass – 5 reasons why dogs love it?

What self-respecting, fun-loving dog would not love artificial grass? Artificial grass has it all – and then some – when it comes to attributes highest on a dog’s priority list.

1. Feels natural and looks great

OK, so we admit that your pup Jock couldn’t care less about aesthetics. If he did, he wouldn’t ever go potty on the lawn or dig holes in it, would he? But he can sure tell how things feel underfoot. After all, he goes barefoot all year round.

He would tell you that natural grass is disappointing in this regard. It starts out OK — nice and fluffy – but after he’s been rolling or laying down for a while, that grass is flat as a sidewalk. The only way to re-fluff it is by scratching it up with his nails, and you yell at him for doing that. What’s a dog to do?

Artificial grass is never a flop, no matter how long Jock flops on it. It’s always comfortably soft and cushy. If he or the humans in your family tramp the grass down a bit in a high-traffic area, you can use a broom to quickly re-fluff the blades.

Jock won’t be able to dig holes in artificial grass, but who cares? The main reason he does that now is because he’s bored. With artificial grass, you’ll save so much time you’ll have hours on end for fetch, hiking, water sports and all sorts of other doggie fun.

2. It’s free from poisonous stuff

Artificial grass arrives toxin-free, made with no harmful ingredients. It stays that way, because it requires zero applications of nasty chemicals needed to protect natural grass from weeds, pests, and disease. Furthermore, it doesn’t grow, so it never produces pollen, an annoying allergen for dogs as well as people.

3. It’s cleaner than natural grass

Live grass is messy. When you mow, there are always left-behind clippings and debris that cling to fur and paws, inevitably making their way into your house. Live grass tends toward dead patches (where dear old Jock does his thing). These lead to mud when you water or it rains, and means more in-house mess. Artificial grass remains pristine and never makes a mess that dogs have to lick off their bodies or you have to mop up indoors.

4. Artificial grass has a silly side

Even if your pooch is one of those oh-so-sophisticated breeds, we know full well there’s a silly canine under that perfectly-manicured coat. After all, he is a dog at heart! With artificial grass engineered especially for dogs, your pooch can do all the romping and rolling he can stand. No play time is too loony, or too rough, for ruff-tough artificial turf.

Dogs with creative pet parents have it even better, because they can have the personalized play area of their dreams. An artificial grass rooftop for their dog house (assuming that roof is flat) provides the perfect elevated platform for surveying their universe or catching a few winks on a warm day. Grassy flooring inside gives his dog house a stylish interior that’s both comfortable and easy to clean. Here at Perfect Grass, we’re all about pride of home ownership – for dogs as well as people.

5. And what’s the best reason of all?

Dogs love artificial grass simply because their humans love artificial grass. And every dog’s #1 goal is pleasing his owner. So that’s 4 paws up plus 2 thumbs up for artificial grass.

Artificial Grass – Creating play spaces in your backyard for the whole family

Artificial Grass – Creating play spaces in your backyard for the whole family

Why have a backyard if you aren’t going to enjoy it? Sure, you want a good-looking garden so your view out the window is always a treat, but outdoor play time is fundamental to our South African lifestyle. And once you replace your natural grass lawn with artificial grass, you’ll have a lot more time to get outside and have fun.

Artificial grass is so versatile, it can help you design specialized play spaces for every member of your family. Here are just a few suggestions . . .

The Perfect Putting Green

Backyard putting greens used to be a luxury only a few folks could afford. Thanks to advanced varieties of artificial grass, it’s a lot more affordable to design and install a putting green that fits your space and your skill level to a tee. (Yep, we even have a golf turf just right for a backyard tee box, so you can practice your big swings as well as your short game.)

Not into golf? You could install a backyard bowling green or cricket net instead. Fun for all ages.

Happy Kidspace

What’s more fun than hiking over to the grade school to play on the swings and other outdoor equipment? Inviting your young friends over to play on your very own backyard playset. Creating a just-for-kids play space at home means fewer worries about your child’s safety when they’re out and about.

And speaking of safety, when you install artificial grass as “flooring” under your child’s playset, you’ll be increasing their safety even more. That’s because we can install your grass with our latest technology, which reduces risk of injury from falls.

Fun Dogspace

Four-legged family members want to get in on all the backyard action, too. But dog owners have to contend with some extra considerations when it comes to grass. Fortunately, artificial grass from Perfect Grass is the ultimate in dog-friendly. So many of our customers are pet owners (or owners of professional dog-related businesses), we have artificial grass designed specifically for dogs.

It’s tough as dog nails, dig-proof, quick and simple to keep clean, and fends off odors. We have artificial grass for lawns where dogs will play with the rest of the family.

Sunny Poolside

Nothing says backyard play like a pool. And nothing makes the space around your pool soft, cool, and slip-proof like artificial grass. Surrounding your pool with artificial grass instead of concrete is a lot prettier, too.

Less maintenance means more play

Frankly, escaping from lawn maintenance is one of the two main reasons home owners switch to artificial grass. Yes, you will save thousands of litre of precious water, and that’s a huge plus for our environment and your household budget. But, even the most avid gardener isn’t keen on all that mowing, etc. required to tend natural grass. Even if you kick back and do nothing in your backyard, at least you’re doing that because you want to, right?

Nonetheless, although you can do nearly anything on or around your artificial grass, there are a few things you should avoid doing. With those few simple cautions in mind, you and your family will be ready to get outside and make the most of the play spaces you’ve created in your backyard.

Get your soccer fields ready for summer with artificial grass

Get your soccer fields ready for summer with artificial grass

Artificial grass was first designed for use in sport and has seen great improvements in its design and functionality since its inception in the 1960’s.

When it comes to soccer, the use of sand-filled artificial grass systems continued to raise questions in terms of its suitability for the sport, until more recently, when third-generation systems which include both sand and rubber granule infill, became available in the 1990’s.

It was with the advent of the third-generation artificial grass systems that FIFA recognised the potential of artificial grass for the further development of soccer.

In order to ensure that artificial grass used for the sport is be able to offer all the benefits that FIFA seeks, the organisation maintains the FIFA Quality Programme. Only artificial grass products that have undergone stringent FIFA approved testing can be called football turf.

For most schools and small clubs, FIFA approved turf may not be entirely necessary, however for large soccer stadiums or practice venues where international teams are likely to compete and practice, FIFA approved artificial grass is mandatory.

Why does FIFA endorse the use of artificial grass in soccer?

Performance: Because the interaction between the player and surface, as well as the ball and surface is a serious consideration, teams are assured that an artificial turf is an outstanding alternative that will enhance practice and play.

Maintenance: Artificial grass is the perfect alternative as weather conditions and location make no difference to the quality of the grass. Artificial grass requires no sunlight which is perfect for indoor facilities. Where natural grass could become scorched from excessive heat or damaged from frost and cold, artificial grass is not affected by extreme weather conditions.

Durability: Provided the soccer pitch is maintained correctly, with artificial turf installed it can withstand substantial use and significantly more hours of play than a pitch with natural turf. Artificial grass will not become worn out after excessive use and provides teams with a consistent quality pitch at all times.

Safety: Polyethylene terephthalate is the plastic used to manufacture artificial grass. Made from carbon and hydrogen, polyethylene is considered safe for exposure to human beings and does not contain properties that are carcinogenic or known to disrupt hormones. In terms of the construction of a pitch using artificial grass, sufficient cushioning prevents injury while the infill used to maintain the grass pile, is today more often produced using safe materials rather than rubber.

Convenience: Teams can, weather and light permitting, play indoors or outdoors and can play at all times and for extended periods on pitches that have been built using artificial grass. This along with all of the other benefits of using artificial grass, makes for the ultimate in convenience for both professional and amateur teams.

But isn’t an artificial turf expensive?

While it does require an initial investment to build a soccer pitch using artificial grass, that outlay very quickly recoups itself as regular maintenance and turf management costs are significantly reduced.

In a country where our varied weather conditions and lack of water make soccer pitch maintenance particularly expensive and challenging, an artificial grass pitch is a cost-effective and highly practical option.

Since many FIFA endorsed international pitches are now built using artificial grass, for any school or club intent on preparing players for the big leagues, an artificial grass pitch provides them with the experience they need to go further in their game.

Artificial Grass – Could Johannesburg be greener with Artificial Grass?

Artificial Grass – Could Johannesburg be greener with Artificial Grass?

The dry, rainless, frosty winter in Johannesburg has always decimated our lawns. This coming summer however, the question is whether we will be able to revive our lawns to the luscious, green expanses we all love. Now more than ever, we ask: Is artificial grass the answer?

The South African Weather Service has predicted a 70% probability of El Niño occurrence from mid Spring into Summer.

El Niño is a climate cycle that is associated with warmer than usual weather. While for Cape Town, El Niño means a dry, hot summer as normal, for Johannesburg, this means hotter than normal temperatures and most importantly – less rain. In addition to ongoing water restrictions, the water insecurity that Johannesburg already faces, will be exacerbated by this weather system.

For the lawns that help to beautify Johannesburg with inviting expanses of green in summer, the drought means that we need to consider other options.

Is artificial grass an environmentally friendly choice?

The fact that natural lawns are a terrible and unnecessary drain on water reserves, is inescapable. What is also true however, is that lawns will always be favoured as both a visually appealing addition to the garden, and an important element of recreation.

When it comes to saving water, artificial grass is a definite win for the environment. As opposed to natural lawn which requires regular watering, artificial grass only needs the occasional hose-down to remove dust.

In addition, lawns have long been considered ‘green deserts’ as they contribute little of value to the environment. While natural grass that has been allowed to grow tall provides food and shelter for small wildlife, a trimmed and manicured lawn does none of that.

Some will argue that artificial grass is made from synthetic and even toxic materials, however, as detailed in a previous post ‘Is Artificial Grass Really Green?’, artificial grass is in fact an environmentally friendly alternative to the real thing.

Is artificial grass an affordable alternative?

The installation of a good quality artificial grass from a reputable, experienced service provider, requires a reasonable initial outlay. With prices between just R 300 and R 500 per square meter for a professionally installed lawn (supplied and fitted) however, the average garden will within the period of a few months to a year, recoup that initial outlay. In addition to saving on the cost of watering and the upkeep of an irrigation system, you can also look forward to saving money on pesticides, fertilisers, top-dressing, a garden service and more!

Greener homes, offices and sports fields.

For home-owners, commercial properties, retail outlets, schools and sports-centres – among other locations that value a neat, green lawn – artificial grass provides the perfect solution to the struggle associated with keeping a natural lawn alive.

Hard wearing and resilient to even the highest foot-traffic, artificial grass can be used extensively with only the simplest maintenance to keep it looking great. Unaffected by weather – be that frost or searing heat – artificial grass stays green all year round.

For people living and working in Johannesburg who look forward to the summer rains and the relief to gardens and lawns that this brings, artificial grass is definitely a viable, long-term solution in the face of the impending drought. It is easy to maintain, environmentally friendly, hard-wearing and cost-effective and can be used anywhere that you would want a beautiful, lush, green lawn.
